KNOW WHERE YOU STAND IN THE CREATOR ECONOMY
Let’s start with your title – how do you self-identify? Are you a creator, an influencer, a solopreneur? Once you identify your title, you can begin researching similar salaries/rates within your industry. Curious about influencer rates? Working as a freelancer? You can also ask people in your network/working at brands who tap freelance creators what their rate/compensation structures are.
MEASURE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS
Now that you know who tf you are, it’s time to reflect on wtf you do. Ask yourself the question:
IN THE PAST YEAR, WHAT ARE THREE ACHIEVEMENTS THAT YOU'RE PROUD OF?
The achievement can be a result/product AND/OR the process it took to get there (i.e. what problems did you solve in order to achieve your result). Use these as measurable successes to pitch yourself and advocate for your rate.
IDENTIFY YOUR COMPENSATION BENCHMARKS
Let’s talk dough, bread, the bag…you get it. Create your WWW a la PepTalkHer – what is your wish rate number, your want number, and your walk number? AKA your dream number, minimum number and f#ck off number. Think of your want number as the bread – it is the sturdy, doable number that can sustain you. If a client/brand can only offer you your want number, consider what professional development help + network connections they can offer you. This is the butter – while it may not immediately provide monetary compensation, it allows you to widen your network and create long standing relationships that can transform into future clients. Don’t know how to ask for the butter? Check out our formal network request template!
TRACK YOUR IMPACT
Time to show UP and show OFF. Be diligent about showing people the immediate value you’re bringing – for example, if you’re a creator, show the reach you have and the engagement your content receives. Sharing it directly before being asked to do so will highlight your own organization and productivity. PRO TIP: Put a scheduled time on your calendar each month to share these numbers with ongoing clients/brands/partners.
DISCOVER WHERE/HOW TO FIND SUPPORT THAT HOLDS YOU ACCOUNTABLE
You can’t get that bread without getting that support! Reach out to friends and peers who may also be struggling to know their worth. Having accountability buddies and hype-friends will not only boost your confidence when it comes to taking these strides, but will also keep you in check when you might slip. And of course, you’ve got the folks at Norby and PepTalkHer to help ya out – through our programming like Creators Who Share and PepTalkHer’s challenges and free resources, you’ll be able to slay the game and get that bread in no time.
